Mary Alice Lavender passed away on September 6th, 2016. She was born on January 29th, 1928 to Cuma (Hamilton) and Robert Pollard in Houston, Texas, where she grew up. She attended Houston public schools and Rice University, where she earned a bachelor's degree in English and a Masters' degree in American History. She was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa. Mary Alice married James Mitchell Lavender on August 27th, 1949, and they had one daughter, Nancy. James' career as a mechanical engineer with the federal service took them to China Lake, California; LaMarque, Texas; Shreveport, Louisiana; and San Antonio, Texas, where they moved in 1972. At various times, Mary Alice worked as a School teacher, editor, and library assistant. While she was raising her daughter, she was a homemaker, dedicated church worker, and a Girl Scout troop leader. Family and church were the two most important thing's in Mary Alice's life. She took every opportunity to spend time with family and especially enjoyed traveling with family members. She and James visited all fifty states, Mexico, Canada and several European countries. they also enjoyed birdwatching during their retirement. Mary Alice was a lifelong member of the Christian Science Church and served in almost every capacity. Mary Alice is survived by her daughter and son-in-law Nancy and James Bryan of Georgetown, Texas, and her nephew, Keith Vaglienti of Houston, Texas. She was predeceased by her parents, her husband James, her sister and brother-in-law Anna Beth and John Vaglienti, and her nephew Mark Vaglienti. At her request, no services are planned.
