Josefa Vazquez Colon de Gomez, 93, of Salinas, Puerto Rico, passed on to eternal life on January 8, 2016 in San Antonio, Texas. To some she was known as Josefina or Josie, but to her loving children, she was "Mami." Born to Primitiva Colon de Vazquez and Pedro Vazquez on November 26, 1922, she immigrated to Brooklyn, New York in the early 1940s where she worked as a seamstress. In 1947, she married David Gomez Vargas of Aguadilla, Puerto Rico in Brooklyn. Her love for sewing led her to work for many years in numerous venues, including as an interior and clothing designer. She was an avid gardener, outstanding cook and loved reading and music. Her greatest passion, however, was her family. Nothing made her happier than caring for her husband and three children creating a beautiful home for them as well as visiting her family and many friends, many of whom were still in her beloved Puerto Rico. She highly valued education for herself and her children; so much so that, in spite of life's challenges, she earned her GED at the age of 62. Josefina Gomez was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, David; her parents, her brother Silverio Vazquez and her sister Juanita Gonzalez Vazquez. She is survived by her sister, Gloria Vazquez of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and her soul sister, Jenny Alonzo of Caguas, Puerto Rico. She is also survived by her three children: David Paul Gomez and his wife, Violeta of San Antonio, Liliana Gomez Michel and her husband, Victor of Oklahoma City, and Benjamin Gomez and his fiancAC., Maricel Gana of San Antonio; five grandchildren: Richard Gomez, Steven Gomez, Jennie Muscanell, Matthew Gomez and Sarah Gomez, fourteen great grandchildren, her Goddaughter, Maggie Acevedo DiBlasio, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and many, many friends. Viewing will be at Chapel Hill Funeral Home, 7735 Gibbs Sprawl Rd.
