Joo W. “Joe” Kang, 82, beloved husband, father, and grandfather, passed away peacefully with family by his side on Friday, March 12, 2021, in San Antonio, Texas. Joe was born in South Korea, endured the Korean War, served in the Korean Army (including as a liaison to the United States Army), and eventually immigrated to the U.S. in the late 1970s—first to Houston and then to Midland, Texas.
Throughout his adult life, Joe was a devout Christian and active as a Deacon in many Korean churches, two of which he helped found. Most recently, he was a member of the First Korean Presbyterian Church of San Antonio.
A passionate sportsman, he played golf regularly (consistently scoring at par), was an excellent tennis player, and loved to watch all forms of sports (but football was his favorite). He was loved by his neighbors and was always there to help them.
Joe is survived by his wife of 52 years, Chong “Sue” Choe, and his three daughters, Robin Kim (m. Sang Kim) and their children, Jacob, Anna, and Emma of Michigan, Kathy Shon (m. Jun Shon) of Washington, and Marty Kang of New York.
