Florence Marjorie Hammond Selders

October 23, 1929 - April 27, 2013

FLORENCE MARJORIE HAMMMOND SELDERS was born October 23, 1929 in New Orleans, LA. She was given the nickname "Marge" by her father, Jesse Hammond Sr. She met her college sweetheart, Fate Oliver Selders, during the 1950s and the couple married in 1956. During college Marge became a member of Beta Sigma Phi, the international social, cultural and civic society. After graduation Oliver joined the Air Force, where he served for 23 years, and Marge earned her Masters Degree in Early Childhood Education and went on to become a civilian counselor for the U.S. Marine Corps, which she did for three years. Following that, she had a 20-year career as a school teacher until her retirement in the early 1980s. During Oliver's Air Force and civil service career, Marge, Oliver and their son Marcus, who was born four years later, traveled the world together, visiting Japan, Germany and France and most of the continental United States. During this period Marge often referred to her tight-knit family as "The Three Musketeers."

Marge and Oliver retired in San Antonio, and in 1986 they joined Woodlake Baptist Church, where both were active in church affairs. Both loved singing, and sang in the choir for almost 20 years. Marge frequently sang special music, including opera, which was rooted in her southern Louisiana heritage, and her explanations of its origins were as fascinating as her performance of the music. Marge had a strong and stylish singing voice. During an incident while in Germany, she once began singing along with a band, and received such an enthusiastic reception that the band continued requesting that she sing more and more songs. She had a joyous personality which was reflected in her membership in the Red Hat Society, whose stated aim is to find the humor in life and "join red-gloved hands as we go for it together."

Marge was a beloved sister and friend to everyone who knew her. Both she and Oliver served and attended faithfully at Woodlake Baptist until Oliver was called home to the Lord on April 10, 2011. Marge later moved to Moore, OK. to be with her son Marcus and his family, and was living with them when she passed in April 27, 2013.

She is survived by her son Marcus and his wife Jacqualine Selders, three sisters; Gloria Mansion of New Orleans, Barbara Ann Cornelius of New Orleans, and Betty Ratter of Jacksonville, IL., one brother; Jesse Hammond Jr. of San Francisco; three grandchildren: Tameka Selders, Tasha (Selders) Atchison and Christine Selders; and seven great-grandchildren. Interment will be alongside her husband at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio, Texas.

Florence H. Selders, 83, went to be with the Lord April 27, 2013. She was a schoolteacher for 20 + years and worked for the United States Marines as a counselor for 3 yrs.
