Donald Robert Catland passed away on Monday, July 6th, 2015 in Converse, Texas, at the age of 62. He was born in St.Petersburg, Florida on December 16th, 1952, the son of Violet Muresan. Don graduated from a life of earthly service to a heavenly presence with Jesus Christ, whom he knew as Lord and Savior. Don was raised in North Tonawanda, New York by his mother and maternal grandparents, Sam and Nellie Muresan. Don worked as a volunteer fireman and paramedic in North Tonawanda. He moved to Houston, Texas with his mother and brothers in January of 1978 where he worked as a security guard while studying at the law enforcement academy. He subsequently worked as a police officer in Spring Shadow and April Sound, Texas. Don moved to San Antonio in 1983 and began his career with the Bexar County Sheriff's Department in February 1985. As a Deputy Sheriff, he served as a hostage negotiator and patrolman early in his career. Because of health concerns, he was later transferred to serve as a Bailiff at the Bexar County Courthouse, until heart problems caused his retirement from service. Don is survived by his wife, Cheryl Ann Shipp-Catland; his former wife, Deborah Bevil Catland; sons Kyle Nathaniel Catland and Robert Anthony Shipp; daughters Kelli Nicole Catland Pacheco, Kristin Beth Catland and Katie Marie Catland Pacheco; brothers Elfred Catland and Pete Catland. A funeral service will be conducted at 10:00am Tuesday, July 14th in the chapel at Chapel Hill Funeral Home with interment services to follow at the Chapel Hill Memorial Park Field of Honor. There was always faith, hope and love in Don's heart; room at the table for everyone. Today, we take with us many precious memories of Don. We were all an important part of his life. What we do with these memories depends on our grounding in faith, hope and love. We should not let sadness control our destiny, but rather we should celebrate Don's life and the memories that will keep him present with us in our hearts.
