Betty Wright-Hawkins

Betty Rose Wright-Hawkins entered into eternal life on Friday, June 12, 2020 in New Braunfels, Texas, she was 81 years old.

Betty was born on April 27, 1939 in Hamilton, Georgia to Gladys Grandberry and Lemmie Wright. Most of her childhood and young adult years were spent in Columbus, Georgia where she was raised by her grandparents and then, her mother and stepfather.

On August 6, 1965, she married Thomas O’Neil Hawkins. They raised two children, Penelope and Thomas.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents, Gladys Grandberry and Lemmie Wright; her stepfather, Tommie Lee Toombs; her brothers, Otis Toombs and Thomas Toombs; and her husband, Thomas O’Neil Hawkins.

Her spirit is carried on by her children, Penelope Joyce Hawkins, Thomas Alphonso Hawkins and wife Rosa Carmen; her grandchildren, Nicholas Alejandro Hawkins and Araceli Rose Hawkins; her sisters, Mary Lois Williams, Patricia Washington, Catherine Phillips, Carolyn Brown, and Gwendolyn Toombs; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and family too numerous to list but not forgotten.

Betty left school at the age of 14 to help raise her siblings; she was a selfless and amazing caregiver. Her Christian faith was extremely important to her and was passed down to her children. She did this in both words and actions. She was an excellent role model of perseverance, compassion, and love.

Betty loved national and international travel (especially Las Vegas and Europe), adventures in cooking (she enjoyed trying new recipes), fine dining, and gardening. Those who knew Betty will truly miss her.

A Visitation will be held at the Chapel Hill Funeral Home on Saturday, June 29, 2020 beginning at 9:00 am with a funeral service to begin at 11:00 am. The burial will follow at the Chapel Hill Memorial Park.
