Barbara Gurley

October 18, 1921 — June 2, 2016

The life of Barbara Caroline (Reifsnyder) Gurley came to a peaceful end at Northeast Methodist Hospital on June 2nd, 2016, at the age of 94 years. Barbara was born in Kalamazoo, Michigan to Maurice and Augusta Reifsnyder on October 18th, 1921. She grew up in Lansing, Michigan, raised by her maternal grandmother, Carolena (Knapp) Groves after her mother's premature death. She now joins them and her deceased siblings Charlotte Speer, Maurice Reifsnyder, Jr. and Connie Nelson. She is survived by her daughters Barbara "Babs" Nicodemus of Nevada, Deidre Clark of Alabama, Marcia Knapp of Illinois, and son Daniel Comerford, Jr. of California. Her youngest daughter, Mary Comerford already awaits her "Homecoming." Her amazing artistic gifts survive in her daughter Marcia, and in her grand daughter Sheila, one of her eight grandchildren. Somewhere in her eleven great grandchildren we hope this gift may again be enjoyed. Barbara joined with Esther Pinter and Rosalie Schaefer in 1990 to found the Universal Quilters (UQ). Through the UQ, she experienced the great joy of sharing her textile artistry techniques and design skills. UQ still applies their collective talents to creating gifts for various community human service organizations in and around the San Antonio area. Barbara was surrounded in her final days by her dear friends Richard and Sandy Rodriguez, Sharon Young and June Ingle to whom the family owes such a great debt of gratitude. A visitation will be held at Chapel Hill Funeral Home, 7735 Gibbs Sprawl Rd., San Antonio, Tx 78239, on Tuesday, June 7th, from 9:00 AM until 10:30 AM. A brief memorial service will follow from 10:30 AM untill 11:00 AM. Barbara's cremains will then be sent to join her late husband Norton Gurley in Windridge Memorial Garden and Nature Sanctuary, Cary, Illinois.
